If you transport heavy or bulky loads on a flatbed or trailer, DOT rules mandate the methods of securing the load. Typically, chains are mandated, often times though, people will use load straps. If securing earth moving or heavy equipment, straps are a no-no. The sharp metal edges can slice even the thickest binder straps. Thus, chains are the way to go. To tighten those chains, binders are employed to provide the necessary tension to keep the load chained tight to the floor of the conveyance. There are primarily 2 types of binders (or boomers), the lever style where an offset handle provides the tension once it is flipped over center. These often require a cheater bar to help leverage the tight chain linkage. They are also injury prone if you're not careful. Pinched fingers and kickback can occur. These ratchet style binders are far more friendly to actuate, though the common practice of loosening a set by holding both hooks and spinning the center portion can also lead to an injury if you don't hold the binder far enough away from the body. The two hook ends are connected to two opposite threaded eyelets that allow for a single-direction crank to either tighten or loosen the load when levering the center section of the binder. This binder is heavily coated in a shiny orange paint, helpful for standing out on a rusty or mud-encrusted deck. Thankfully, the working thread section is not painted as we have seen previously on other binders. Typically, before putting these types of binders in service, it is good practice to generously coat the threads and ratchet assembly with lubricating oil to prevent rust and allow for smooth operation.
